Let it Snow! January 31, 2012

Posted by Marina in : Spring 2012 , add a comment

No really, where is the snow?!

This year, Stevenson is lacking in the snow department.  But its ok, cheer up!  Residence Life is bringing you an event to brighten up your day and bring some snow into your life. Yep – it’s tie-dye snowflakes!  Join some of the apartment staff members to tie-dye some snowflakes and bring the wintery stuff our way!  See you on the 31st!

Update: I went to this event earlier tonight and it was a BLAST.  Although our first snow of the year came right after I wrote this blog, I am crossing my fingers for a snow day, real, real soon.  Yes, a snow day – I am a teacher you know!

A tootsie roll, that is :)

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, don’t you need some candy for your sweet one?  Alpha Kappa Alpha, the newest Sorority on campus, is on a roll with programming on campus this month.  First with the Bystanders Talk and now with Sweeten the Day with Candy!  The ladies are selling super sweet candy grams to students on campus in Rockland on specific dates and at certain times, generally in the evening.  To see the specific dates and time, check out your RA’s bulletin board.

2012 Residence Life Training: The Bystander Effect and More January 16, 2012

So even though I have been back on campus since the 2nd, I am finally reuniting with my fellow residence life coworkers for Reslife training, Winter 2012!  Although this training was only two days long, there were new aspects to the training that were refreshing and insightful.  First, a speaker from Towson University who worked for the Baltimore County Sex Crime Unit spoke to us about sexual assualt and other cases that could happen on our campus.  According to statistics, 1 in 4 college women are sexually assualted.  YEAH, 1 IN 4.  Those are some crazy statistics!  However, the most alarming training was the Bystander Effect that was followed two weeks later with a talk sponsored by AKA!  The Bystander Effect is basically watching something happening and doing nothing about it.  As a leader on campus, it is my job to always do something.  But really, how many times have you seen something that should have been reported or you saw someone who needed help and you did NOTHING?  You, my dear, are another crutch in the bystander effect. To learn more, check out the AKA Bystanders Talk on January 25th!

RA Holiday Party! December 9, 2011

Talk about staff bonding – Tuesday night, the SRA Morale Committee brought all of the RA’s, RD’s, Sarah, Jeremy, and Claire together to celebrate the Holidays while having a gingerbread house making contest!  We had yummy treats and trays with sparkling cider to get that upscale party feel.  But at the end of the day, I think we were just excited to be together and having fun.  I know I personally enjoyed the time I spent with my fellow RA’s and my staff.  Although my staff did not win the gingerbread making contest, we had a blast making it!  And that, is what this time of year is all about – getting together with the people in your life that truly matter.  I must say though, we were all super competitive!  But let’s face it, we all know who the best staff is ;) 414 <3

One of my most favorite and beloved holiday movies – 8 Crazy Nights featuring Adam Sandler.  Although I am not Jewish, and I do not know a lot about Hanukkah, I LOVE this movie because it spreads such a great message that can be applied to any holiday.  And let’s face it – it is HILARIOUS!!!  Props to MAPS Movie for showing this last night.  Watching it on the projector screen with a bunch of my residents was awesome!  Keep up the great work and we would all love to see some more movie nights!

with stockings and wrapping paper, we are in the spirit here in Western Run!

Honestly, I didn’t think my residents could get any more fabulous.  (I mean, their RA is pretty stellar).  But today I was on my way to Ratcliffe and HAD to take pictures of my girls doors at the end of the hallway!!!  They are so wonderful and christmas spirited and make me smile :)   Enjoy!

Toys For Tots December 7, 2011

It is Christmas time and tis’ the season to be giving.  However, The Patriot’s Club is on the ball and eager to gather unwrapped toys for tots who are in need this coming holiday season.  For those who do not know, The Patriot’s Club is a club on campus led by members of the University who are active in the ROTC program and some are even enlisted in various branches of the military.  It’s completely honorable that they are taking the time to collect toys for children who may not get any this season without our help.  Don’t have any toys to donate?  Check out the flyers on both campuses that contain a number you can text to donate $5!  What can be easier?  You text already, don’t you?  Than text for a cause.  Or donate new and unwrapped gifts to the Toys for Tots.  Boxes are located on both campuses.

KDP Book Fair! December 2, 2011

Do you remember going to the book fair as a kid and wanting to buy everything in sight?  They always got me with those funky pencils and pens at the checkout station.

Wouldn’t it be nice to just act like a kid sometimes?  Or how about get some educational gifts for the kids in your life?  The KDP bookfair was the perfect holiday stop for all things kids on campus!

I must say, as an education Intern, I bought SOOOOOO many books.  I think I spent around $80 on just children’s books.  There is something quite magical about a good children’s book.  I even bought a christmas book for my Dad that I have been looking for all year!

Oh, what’s that? YOU MISSED IT? It’s ok – KDP usually brings this wonderful event back to campus in the spring!

Tonight I attended the Empty Bowls Porject event in the Rockland Banquet Room.  I myself am a die hard soup fan – but tonight I was able to eat soup, get a super cool bowl, AND help end hunger.  Yep – I paid $5 and my money went towards ending local and global hunger.
