A Festive Night at Rockland March 8, 2010

Did somebody order an African Steel Drum Band? Because they are ready to play!

That’s right!  Tonight in Rockland we enjoyed some live entertainment while chomping down on some authentic African foods in honor of Multicultural Awareness Week.  My favorite was the shrimp and rice stir fry!  Oh man was it delicious! The line was so long that it extended to the Waffle Makers at one point in time.  But hey, it was totally worth it.  Another tasty treat on the menu tonight was the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on top.  By far the best thing I have ever eaten in Rockland, ever!  I cannot wait to see what Rockland has in store for us for the remainder of the week!

Personally inviting you to enjoy Multicultural Awareness Week at Stevenson University!

Today marked the beginning of a very exciting and diverse week here at Stevenson called Multicultural Awareness Week.  I walked into Rockland tonight to make myself a shirt and declare who I am and why I am different.  Student Activities handed out the shirts and wanted students to focus on the things that make up different.  Putting “Hello, I am Awesome” wasn’t quite cutting it this time around.  I decided to put that I am “A Survivor” because I am proud of the fact that I have survived many things in my life.

Around campus I have seen all kind of shirts!  Some funny, some serious, and some are just straight forward.  I plan on wearing my shirt Wednesday through the Tunnel of Oppression where I will be giving tours.  It starts at 5 and ends at 10 so please take the time to come down for this special ten minute tour!

March Open House March 6, 2010

This morning I woke up bright and early, excited to show my room for the March Open House (formerly the February Open House) and also give tours through Western Run with my fellow RA’s.  I got out of bed extra early to find that there was no water… anywhere!!! Here is a picture of my faucet all the way up, but nothing is coming out! (Trust me, I started to panic)

Luckily for me, Stevenson had port-o-potties delivered later in the day.  Although, I still went home because I needed a shower.  But, if students could not go home, shuttles were running students over to the Greenspring campus to shower in the locker rooms! Yeah SU!

After figuring out the water situation, I got to work cleaning up my room and getting dressed for the tours.  While getting ready to walk out the door, Wild Stang walked in to judge our suite! Below is a picture of him standing in my room!  It was so exciting!  But not as exciting as having over 200 students come and tour my suite this afternoon.  I loved having people come in and see just how awesome our dorms really are!  Haven’t taken a tour yet?  You HAVE to see our residence halls.  Even Wild Stang loves living here!

A Rainy Game March 3, 2010

Just days after the opening of the Lacrosse season here at SU, the weather is already threatening fans who love sitting out in the warm weather watching the men and women play.  However, rain was no match for these determined fans today.  I walked out of my Special Education class and saw a crowd out fans sitting in the commuter lounge watching the game from the window!  They were cheering and hooting and hollering for the Mustangs joyous win and in my mind were labeled true fans.  If only the people outside knew they could have sat inside on a couch and watched the game!

The Coming Out Monologues March 2, 2010

Tonight I went to a very special event hosted by a very diverse group of students on campus called The Q-Group.  The Q-Group supports the LGBT community as well as equality and overall just plain happiness, because everyone deserves happiness.  But as many of us found out tonight, happiness is hard to find when you cannot be excepted for who you are by the people who love you most.  The show was introduced by Jacob Quimby and Andy Gepert, two of the most amazing kids on this planet, who worked extremely hard to coordinate tonight’s event entitled The Coming Out Monologues.  Stories were read about “coming out” from various view points.  They were also read by members of the Q-Group from which most of the stories originated.  Some were powerful and uplifting, others were sad and heartwrenching.  And then their were the very few that were funny and charming, and everything we wish upon others who are faced with this life challenge of coming out to the ones we love.  I was amazed by the bravery of some of the monologues writers.  People don’t deserved to be judges and ridiculed because of who they are. Being gay is not a choice or a life style. And no person should be denied love or happiness. regardless of sexual orientation.  I personally want to thank the Q-Group for putting on such an amazing event.  Way to go!

Now we all need a good laugh once in a while – but Rob O’Reilly is hysterical!  I went to his show in the Rockland Banquet room tonight and almost fell on the floor looking!  With his string bean figure, pedophile glasses, and girlish hair, he could totally pass as a Stevenson student.  However, Rob comes from New York where he does comedy for a living.  He has been debuted on Comedy Central and a classical YouTube sensation.  So, looking for a good laugh?  Check him out!  You will not regret it!

Relief for Haiti February 25, 2010

I feel like the shirt says it all.

Today, Stevenson University took the time and effort to keep Haiti in their thoughts by implementing a shirt drive and making Haitian food in the Rockland Marketplace.  The shirts were only $5 and all of the proceeds are going to The Red Cross and directly to Haiti.  I heard that they sold out tonight in Rockland so it seems like everyone has one!  I know I sure do!  Didn’t get to buy a shirt?  Contact Student Activities to see if they have any left-overs and show you care about Haiti.

BINGO!!! February 24, 2010

BINGO is Stevenson’s favorite 5 letter word.  Especially when it involves a big screen t.v. and other prizes adding up to $500!  I gathered up all of my friends and headed over to the Rockland Banquet room to support the Lacrosse team and the opening of the upcoming season.  Everyone I knew was there!  And it was so much fun!  I mean, it’s always fun, it’s BINGO!  But my roommates Maria and Chelsea had overnighters and even their overnighters got some of the BINGO action and won some really cool prizes!  Stevenson has something for everyone, literally.  Unfortunately, I did not win anything… I never do.  But, congrats to Nick Muesel who took home the Big Screen on the last game!

Info Session February 24, 2010

The time has come once again for students to start thinking about housing plans for next year.  In lu of this thought, Residence Life is taking different steps towards educating students this year about the housing lottery process.  For now, students should be attending info sessions (like the one pictured above) and attend the mandatory floor meetings held by their RA’s.  It is important to get all the facts about the housing lottery before you end up homeless on campus! No, but seriously, find your roommates now, think about where you wanna live, get your housing deposit in, register for classes, fill out the characteristics form, and the rest will come at a later date.

Who doesn’t love a delicious root beer float?  I know I sure do!  So earlier tonight I took a quick stroll over to Patapsco where they were holding the best event ever: Root Beer Floats!  They were the most amazing thing ever to complete my oh so busy day.  Missed it?  That’s ok.  You can always make your own at Rockland, anytime!
