Make It Work May 15, 2011
Posted by Marina in : Fall 2011, Informational Events, Spring 2011 , add a commentFashion Design has arrived at Stevenson University

Just as Stevenson is rapidly growing and changing, the design field is continuously moving as well. To stay afloat on such a popular and demanding field requires individuals to hold a solid foundation of both relevant garment and accessory design and production practice. The Fashion Design major is designed to prepare its students to develop this knowledge.
The curriculum is intended to entice its students through offering a profound understanding of apparel design that will survive in the retail marketplace. The degree will encourage students to incorporate his or her own individual aesthetics of design with an overall understanding of the design market, design history, psychology of design, necessary materials and techniques and relationships to the human form.
Fashion Design will be a new major added to Stevenson’s School of Design, and includes inspiration from current and successful Visual Communication Design, Film/Video/Theater and Business Communication majors already within the school, in addition to Business Administration from the School of Business.
Upon completion of the Fashion Design program, students will be able to apply the skills learned to become practicing Fashion Design professionals and to be competitive in a demanding market.

Look Out May 11, 2011
Posted by Marina in : Fall 2011, General, Informational Events , add a commentBe on the look out!
Maumi Cannell-Chatterton will be sending out several emails throughout the summer to get you prepped and ready to go for this coming school year.
I’m sure you’re all wondering… How do I pick my roommate? How do I know what building I’m in? Along with so many other questions that you want answered. Here are a few answers that will be able to hold you off until those emails rush in:
Hold off on the roommates until after Mustang Days in June. After Orientation we will kick off the process. You will do your Personal Characteristics on WebXpress and then you and your roommates (we need to hear from EVERYONE) will email ResLife (we’ll get that email up & running again).
You will be assigned FIRST to the Freshman Billing Room (building 500 – room 500) so that Housing costs show up on your bill because that is important for Financial Aid, etc. But we actually place you in your room with your roommates in late July & early August. But you will be living in the two BRAND NEW residential suites currently going through last minute construction and inspections.
It is important to remember that you also have to make sure you get in your Health Form and get the meningitis vaccine – you don’t get to move in without them! Hope this helps resolve some of those lingering questions.
Also be sure to join the Stevenson University Class of 2015 Facebook page to meet and chat with fellow 2015 Mustangs and/or follow Stevenson on Twitter @StevensonU for campus updates.
We can’t wait to see all of you new Mustangs in August!!

Stand Up Against Cancer April 15, 2011

For the first time, the Stevenson University community is hosting Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. The overnight event will take place Friday, April 15 and run through Saturday, April 16, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Festivities will be held in Stevenson’s Owings Mills campus gymnasium, located on 10945 Boulevard Circle in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Students, staff and faculty members will sacrifice a night of sleep to participate in teams where they will walk the gym in support of Relay for Life. Additionally, there will be free food and a myriad of entertainment and fundraising activities in which off duty team members can participate. Each team, representing a different club, organization, or department at Stevenson, will be walking to raise money for cancer research and Relay for Life.
Registration for these teams will remain open until the start of Relay For Life, and is open to the entire Baltimore community. The participants need only pay a minimum donation of $10, which serves as a registration fee, and can join an existing team, create a new team, or participate individually. Registration can be completed at http://www.relayforlife.org/StevensonUniversity.

Once participants enter the gym, they can leave and re-enter at their leisure until midnight, when re-admission will be closed.
Prior to the event, Stevenson is hosting a free reception for cancer survivors and their caregivers, from 5-6 p.m. in the Brown School of Business. Those interested in attending must pre-register by calling or emailing Nick Farano at 516-710-5842 or by e-mail: nfarano@stevenson.edu.
Relay For Life is an American Cancer Society-sponsored event that brings communities together around the globe to create awareness and raise funds for cancer research. “Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length,” according to the organization’s website.
NASD April 13, 2011

On Wednesday, April 13th Stevenson hosted it’s annual National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) Field Tests on the Greenspring Campus at the MC from 10 am to 2 pm and on the Owings Mills Campus at Rockland from 11:30 am to 1 pm and at Ratcliffe from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
Every year surveys are taken, games are played, and students learn about the effects of alcohol through interactive games.
Games included:
Alcohol Screening Survey (answer questions about yourself and your peers related to alcohol usage).
Sobriety Check (walking the line with beer goggles on).
Dart Board (playing darts with beer goggles on).
Pour Your Own Drink (mix the correct amount of alcohol for drinks).
Tricycle (riding a tricycle through a coned area with beer goggles on).
Brain Injury Association (learn how alcohol damages the brain).

While some college students may drink, more and more of them drink alcohol in ways that can place them and others at risk. NASD raises awareness, educates students about unhealthy drinking habits and offers them confidential alcohol screenings.
The screenings – offered online or in-person at NASD events — are anonymous and confidential. The brief screening about alcohol use will help students get help if needed and referrals are tailored for the campus counseling center or health center.
Take It Back April 8, 2011
Posted by Marina in : Informational Events, Spring 2011 , add a commentWelcome to Take Back The Night. A place free from sexual assault and abuse. We invite you to become part of the solution, part of the end to sexual violence. Here is a place to take a stand, a place to break the silence.
Here we can TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!
Come out and support the many people in the world who have suffered, died, and could suffer from sexual assault and abuse. It will be taking place tomorrow night, Monday April 18th in the Apartment Quad on the Owings Mills Campus from 7pm to 9 pm.
Last year Stevenson University hosted Take Back The Night and it was an amazing night event that allowed for many students, faculty, and staff to come together and support each other through the issues that some are faced with every day.
As a part of this night Stevenson’s own D*SIRE group and students have met several times this semester to review Stevenson’s sexual assault and abuse policy, to compare it to other University and College’s policies, and to take a stand to break the silence and get the policies redefined to better fit the views and needs of Stevenson students.

Testicular Tuesday March 30, 2011
Posted by Marina in : Informational Events, Spring 2011 , add a comment“Get out of your Rut, Check your N…”
The Facts:
-
Testicular cancer is the most common malignancy in young men between the ages of 20 and 34. There are about 7500 new cases yearly, with approximately 350 deaths per year in the US.
-
Testicular cancer is more common in white men than black or Asian.
-
Although it accounts for only about 1 percent of all cancers in men, it is the number one cancer killer among men in their 20′s and 30′s.
-
Most testicular cancers are self-discovered by patients as a painless or uncomfortable lump in the testicle. About 1-3% of testicular neoplasms are bilateral.
-
Pure seminomas constitute roughly 40% of all testicular cancer cases. Forty percent of the testicular cancers have mixture of histology.

-
The cancer risk for boys with a history of undescended testicles is about 10-40 times higher than normal individuals. The risk of developing the disease was estimated at 1 out of 20 for a testis retained in the abdomen and 1 out of 80 if it was within the inguinal canal. The risk remains elevated after surgical correction. Both testis are at higher risk, not just the undescended one.
-
If found early, testicular cancer is almost always curable.
-
Early stage testicular cancer can be treated with surgery and radiation therapy. Late stage testicular cancer can be treated with the combination of surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.
-
The prognosis for men with testicular cancer is very good, even with late stage disease. The chances of recovery are excellent with surgery and radiotherapy for early stage disease. Combined modality is used for treatment of late stage disease with good results.
-
More than 90% of testicular cancer patients are cured by their initial treatment, and many of those who have recurrent disease can also be cured with chemotherapy or radiation.
Tuesday, April 5th 11:30am-1:00pm in the Manuszak Center.
Pick up information about testicular cancer and learn about monthly self exam.
