For the first time, the Stevenson University community is hosting Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. The overnight event will take place Friday, April 15 and run through Saturday, April 16, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Festivities will be held in Stevenson’s Owings Mills campus gymnasium, located on 10945 Boulevard Circle in Owings Mills, Maryland.

Students, staff and faculty members will sacrifice a night of sleep to participate in teams where they will walk the gym in support of Relay for Life. Additionally, there will be free food and a myriad of entertainment and fundraising activities in which off duty team members can participate. Each team, representing a different club, organization, or department at Stevenson, will be walking to raise money for cancer research and Relay for Life.

Registration for these teams will remain open until the start of Relay For Life, and is open to the entire Baltimore community. The participants need only pay a minimum donation of $10, which serves as a registration fee, and can join an existing team, create a new team, or participate individually. Registration can be completed at http://www.relayforlife.org/StevensonUniversity.

Once participants enter the gym, they can leave and re-enter at their leisure until midnight, when re-admission will be closed.

Prior to the event, Stevenson is hosting a free reception for cancer survivors and their caregivers, from 5-6 p.m. in the Brown School of Business. Those interested in attending must pre-register by calling or emailing Nick Farano at 516-710-5842 or by e-mail: nfarano@stevenson.edu.

Relay For Life is an American Cancer Society-sponsored event that brings communities together around the globe to create awareness and raise funds for cancer research. “Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length,” according to the organization’s website.

On Wednesday, April 13th Stevenson hosted it’s annual National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) Field Tests on the Greenspring Campus at the MC from 10 am to 2 pm and on the Owings Mills Campus at Rockland from 11:30 am to 1 pm and at Ratcliffe from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Every year surveys are taken, games are played, and students learn about the effects of alcohol through interactive games.

Games included:

Alcohol Screening Survey (answer questions about yourself and your peers related to alcohol usage).

Sobriety Check (walking the line with beer goggles on).

Dart Board (playing darts with beer goggles on).

Pour Your Own Drink (mix the correct amount of alcohol for drinks).

Tricycle (riding a tricycle through a coned area with beer goggles on).

Brain Injury Association (learn how alcohol damages the brain).

While some college students may drink, more and more of them drink alcohol in ways that can place them and others at risk. NASD raises awareness, educates students about unhealthy drinking habits and offers them confidential alcohol screenings.

The screenings – offered online or in-person at NASD events — are anonymous and confidential. The brief screening about alcohol use will help students get help if needed and referrals are tailored for the campus counseling center or health center.

PROJECT LOVE YOURSELF – VDAY February 18, 2011

Happy Valentine’s Day to all from Stevenson University!

This year we decided to celebrate our Valentine’s day just a little different by hosting a two day event of body tracings and Vagina Monologues.

On Monday, February 14th, Valentine’s Day students were able to join in the old time favorite art project of tracing your body! Once the outline was drawn on the paper students were asked to write positive sayings, quotes, feelings about themselves inside of their body tracings. These were then collected and hung up around the upstairs lobby of Rockland to be viewed before students, staff, and relatives attended the Vagina Monologues on Tuesday, February 15th.

On Tuesday, February 15th Stevenson University hosted the Vagina Monologues where students and staff members performed and spoke about sexual violence against women and girls. Family, friends, students, and staff all came out in support of these brave young women who embraced the powerful stories that are based from the award-winning play based on VDAY founder and playwright’s Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

Congratulations and a huge round of applause to all of the students and staff that took part in bringing this powerful event to Stevenson! We cannot wait to enjoy what The Vagina Monologues will bring next year.

VDAY is a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. Further information about VDAY can be found at http://www.vday.org/cojopening2.html
