At Camp Puh’tok!

Who says being an Elementary Education major isn’t fun?  Yesterday, my fourth grade class from Cedarmere Elementary School took a field trip to the Native American inspired Camp Puh’tok.  The students were given the rules for the day and then went off to their activities.  I helped chaperone a group of 12 children, all very enthusiastic to get started.  The students played native american games, learned how to use their weapons and tools, built a fire, got their war paint on and made some custom jewelry.  It was so much fun for me and the children.  I hope they go on another field trip very very soon!

Great American Smoke-Out November 19, 2009

Today, the Wellness Center sponored a campus wide event called the Great American Smoke Out.  “Commit to Quit” was the events headliner and it was such a success!  Being National Smoking Awareness Month, students, faculty, and staff were educated on what smoking can do to your body and ways to stop smoking.

On the Greenspring Campus, they drew a box and wrote “Great American Smoke-Out” in the middle with other words such as “Smoke Free Zone.”  This gave students a place to sit and relax without having to breathe in second hand smoke that is actually more harmful than smoking itself.

Although Stevenson University is not a smoke-free University, the Resident Halls have made it easier for non-smokers to live in a low smoke area.  Students are not allowed to smoke in the resident halls and starting this year, students have been asked to stand ten feet away from the over hangs if they would like to take a smoke break.  Although it has not been enforced to the extent it should be, the University is pushing towards making our environment comfortable for every student.

Kickboxing… November 18, 2009

Kicked my butt!

In efforts to help keep SU in shape, the Res Life staff of Western Run held an event in Ratcliffe last night entitled Kickboxing with Jeff.  Jeff Otravedic is the fourth floor RA in Western Run who holds his own kickboxing class every Wednesday evening at 7 on the racquetball field down behind Caves.  With his weekly workout being such a success, we asked the black belt to turn all of us interested into “young grasshoppers.”  Hesitant, I participated in the event and boy was I sore this morning!!  However, it was a GREAT workout for every core area on my body.  If you are interested in kickboxing, take Jeff’s class.  It is a lot of fun and you will definitely get a work out!

CAACURH 2009 November 18, 2009

AS you all already know from my last blog, I spent the weekend in FABULOUS Pittsburgh and attended CAACURH at Pittsburgh University. Friday night was a blast at our orientation!  All of the delegates sat around and watched the roll call videos we made.  Unfortunately, ours was not submitted properly and was unable to play.  However, BINGO and bowling in the Athletic building later made up for our spirit loss.  Following BINGO, our delegation was off to bed – Saturday was going to be a LONG day!

Saturday we awake and rush out the door to find Curtis, our advisor. When walking around campus early Saturday morning to find breakfast, I took a picture of the Soldier’s Memorial:

Isn’t it breathtaking???  Breakfast, btw, was delicious!!!  After the feast in their amazing dining hall, which includes a Pizza Hut and Taco Bell Express, we went as a group to the Cathedral – the 2nd tallest in the world.  It is formally named the Cathedral of Learning:

I know, it’s amazing.  But the best part is, I spent my entire day learning about different programs that could possibly benefit SU and our community!!  Inside the Cathedral of Learning, I went through a couple different floors containing “rooms” dedicated towards different cultures i.e. Israeli room, Jewish room, etc…  However, when learning in the classrooms, I really felt like a student.  Wouldn’t it be awesome to have class inside a Cathedral???  The irony came into play when a Towson girl and myself realized we were in a program about censored sex ed – inside a Cathedral.  Woops – oh well.

Anywho, we ended programming, had an AMAZING lunch, and continued onto a team building workshop.  Mind you, CAACURH is a leadership conference, so we all worked together as a delegate to come up with ways to improve Stevenson University.  It was a lot of fun trading our clothes pins and talking about how awesome SU is.  We finally received a break in the day, where we goofed around in the streets of Pittsburgh.  Our advisor Curtis made us stop to take this strikingly handsome picture:

Yes, they put a t-shirt on their mascot statue.  Maybe because there was a huge game going on?  Who knows.  Anyway, later in the evening, we had our banquet in the Soldiers Memorial Banquet Hall, where a famous scene from Silence of the Lambs was filmed!!!!  Oh my gracious, it was SO exciting!  But after all the excitement, Sunday morning rolled around and we were headed back to SU – boy oh boy does it feel good to be home!  However, CAACURH has changed my life!

C – DOUBLE A – C – U – R – H… CAACURH.

Over the years, I have been on many road trips.  However, the most interesting of all was the 2009 Stevenson University CAACURH Delegation roadtrip.  Comprised of various officers within the Hall Council and RHA communities, six of us (including our advisor Curtis Spencer) made the long 4.5 hour car ride to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania!!!  Check out my favorite pic from the back seat view!

This is Alex Weis, the Western Run Hall Council President… asleep.

On Friday the 13th, students from the various Freshman Seminar classes competed in the annual Lego Challenge .  The students were asked as a class to design and follow through with a building concept with the theme being Career Architecture.  The winning class earned bragging rights and a big hooray from the rest of the contestants.  With the classes being so competitive this year, the judges were hesistant to make a decision.  The winning design was built by a Business Communications Freshman Seminar class.  Way to go guys!

at Stevenson University?

It could happen?  Today in the Student Union, student gathered around a table sitting near the door ways around 12:15 waiting to sign a banner that will be sent to Mrs. Michelle Obama herself.  Participants received a free t-shirt, cake, ice cream, and a picture with her cut-out!  You can bet I was there!  Our hopes are to have Michelle Obama speak at the 2010 commencement ceremony for our graduating seniors.  So cross your fingers SU!

Support Our Veterans November 11, 2009

Stevenson University does!

Walking around campus today, one would be able to see banners saying “Stevenson University Salutes Our Veterans.”  But not only are there banners, there are yellow ribbons tied around the light poles around campus as well as American Flags stuck in the ground down the hill to Caves.

If you are a veteran or you know someone who is, salute them.  Veterans Day is an important part of this Nations pride and we owe them our up most respect and gratuity.  Personally, my grandfather fought in World War II.  Although he passed when I was a baby, I will never forget him or his service to his country.  So if you see a veteran any day, especially today, extend your hearts and give a simple “thank you.”  It’ll mean more to them than you or I will ever know.

God Bless America.

Career Fair! November 11, 2009

Yesterday, various organizations around SU held a government and non-profit career fair.  Career Fairs are not only important when trying to gain valuable knowledge about the workforce, but they can also be helpful.  It is not uncommon for college students to attend these fairs at their own colleges and recieve job offers!!  So, how awesome would it be to put on a nice outfit, walk upstairs into Rockland, and land a sweet job?  IT CAN HAPPEN!  next time a career fair comes around, you can bet your bottom dollar I will be there… again.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a TV IN ROCKLAND!

Unfortunately boys and girls, this does not mean we can watch the Raven’s games in Rockland on Monday nights.  However, if you are looking for something to do – check out the TVs! Just like on the Greenspring campus, the TVs in Rockland were set-up to provide us students with the 411.  Meaning, if you are bored and have nothing to do, watch the TVs for upcoming events!!!
