Side Splitting Comedy… Literally! September 30, 2011

You may be wondering, who the heck is this guy and what is he doing?  This is Jonathan Burns.  Comedian and contortionist extroidinaire.   Probably slightly insane and from the looks of it, may have some serious joint problems in the future.  Nevertheless, this man was hilarious!  I took a couple of my residents to see him the other night and we could not stop laughing and awwing in amazement.  I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to move their body the way he does!  If you missed the show, check him out on YouTube.  Warning:  Do not try his acts at home.  You literally may get stuck that way for life.

KDP Inductions September 22, 2011

For those of you who did not know, I happen to be an Education Major here at Stevenson.  Tonight, I watched 26 new members be inducted into the Stevenson University chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education.  I was inducted last year in the Spring as an Honorary Member – cool, huh?  Kappa Delta Pi has been a small organization on campus that is now growing in vast numbers and spirit.  The honor society holds events in the community such as the Senior Citizen Prom, annually.  Most education majors are not a part of KDP.  The requirements hold us to high academic achievement and the desire to make a difference in our communities.  Congratulations to all of the new members of KDP!

Pandini’s is known as the late night gathering spot for a lot of hungry students on campus.

This year they have added some new additions to the menu selection including a new option of delivery that will hopefully be piloted in the Spring of 2012.

Let’s start with the option of pizza by the slice – offered in 4 different varieties of pizza!  The best part about getting the new pizza by the slice is it is quick and delicious!

But wait, want more than just a slice?  You can now purchase Large pizza’s using SU flex, SUone, Cash or Credit!!!!  Oh it gets better – they also have the Large pizza and wing deal.  YES, WINGS!  I tried one the other night and it was delicious!  That’s right, Pandini’s is bringing the heat… and enough to feed you and your friends!

Lastly, Pandini’s has added delicious Salad and Sandwich options that will satisfy your craving any time of day.  They have updated their Pasta, Pizza, and Labretti options, too!

So what’s not to love? Hungry? Gotta a meal plan or some flex?  Go on in and try something new today!

One of the many fun but informative features of the SU Now Portal is Stevenson’s new online campus radio station, Wild Stang Radio (WSR). Listeners will be able enjoy music with SU news on the hour as well as campus events and informative segments on the :15, :30, and :45 each hour. Just log on to the portal page and a tab will take you to WSR player and program guide. All you need to do is click on the WSR icon to activate the digital radio player. If you want to continue listening, just leave the portal open and minimize it on your screen. This will keep you tuned in to SU news, information, and music while you do other work on your computer.
“As students learn more about WSR, we also plan to develop student-hosted and -produced music shows to run after 6 p.m. every day,” says
Aaron Harris , Director of Digital Broadcast Media. “These will offer students an opportunity to share their musical interests with the greater campus community.”
From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, WSR will offer a variety of “music hours,” including Adult Contemporary, Classic Rock, and Adult Alternatives. From noon to 1 p.m., listeners can enjoy an ’80s flashback hour, Aaron adds.
Perhaps most importantly, WSR will be a window into campus news and events in an easily accessible format.
“There are so many things happening at Stevenson. WSR will offer an easy and engaging way to get the word out to the campus community,” Aaron says. “Just tune in.”
Look for a WSR exhibit table at events throughout the year to learn more about how you can become involved with the Stevenson campus radio or contact Aaron Harris at <asharris@stevenson.edu>. WSR’s digital studio is located on the first floor of the Brown School of Business and Leadership.

“Up and Comer” –> 2012 September 16, 2011

You heard it – U.S. News Names Stevenson University a 2012 “Up-and-Comer” in Annual College Rankings
Here’s what our SU Homepage has to say about the exciting news!

Stevenson University has been recognized as one of America’s “Up-and-Comers”—one of only 46 colleges and universities nationwide given this designation—in U.S. News & World Report’s newly released 2012 America’s Best Colleges” rankings. Most significantly, Stevenson was ranked No. 2 among the “Up-and-Coming” Regional Universities-North, a new classification for the University this year.

“Stevenson has seen tremendous growth over the last decade, adding more students, facilities, and programs as well as renewing our focus on career development for our students,” says Kevin J. Manning, Ph.D., President of Stevenson University. “The ‘Up-and-Coming’ designation really reflects the hard work of our faculty and staff, and also speaks to the growing reputation of Stevenson among our peer institutions.”

This is the third time that Stevenson has been recognized as an “Up-and-Coming School” by U.S. News. The category recognizes institutions that, according to U.S. News, “recently made promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities.” During the past decade, Stevenson has significantly increased enrollment while developing a second campus in Owings Mills. The University just opened a new 3,500-seat stadium on its Owings Mills campus for the inaugural season of its new football program as well as its men’s and women’s soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey programs, and more than 2,000 students—the largest resident population in the school’s history—now live on the campus.

Stevenson also moved this year from the U. S. News ranking category of Baccalaureate Colleges-North Region to Regional Universities-North based on the recently revised Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education. The category recognizes institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s programs. Stevenson is ranked No. 79 among the top 183 Regional Universities-North.

Stevenson University, known for its distinctive career focus, is the third-largest independent undergraduate university in Maryland with more than 3,900 students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and adult accelerated degrees at locations in Stevenson and Owings Mills.

One word: Football.

The Stevenson Community has been buzzing about Stadiumpalooza and the opening game for months now.  With 5 a.m. practices and two-a-days before school, the team has been working around the clock to put on the best game of our lives for the sold out stadium they arrived at on Saturday.  The game was absolutely incredible.  Students, parents, faculty, staff, and the owings mills community packed into the stadium so much that people were unable to enter the game.  But what can I say, we made history!  With a struggle in the beginning, the Mustangs came back to tie Christopher Newport and go into DOUBLE overtime where they pulled out with a 46-43 WIN.  Yes, a win.  I cannot tell you how exciting this moment was for all of us who consider ourselves a part of this growing community.  I have faith that they will have an extremely successful first season!

If you missed the game, here are some links to some YouTube videos of the game! :)
