New and Improved Lounges February 20, 2011

Yes, that is indeed a large t.v. hanging on the wall. Where do you ask? These flat screen, 55 inch, t.v.’s can be found in the lounges of all of the suite residence halls. Students can sit in the lounge and relax on our furniture (which is soon to be brand new and updated as well) and socialize with other residents in the building. It gives our first floor lounge a more “home” feeling instead of it feeling like a lobby of a hotel. Since the t.v.’s have been put up, students are CONSTANTLY in the lounge and it is a relief to see our residents getting out of their rooms to socialize with their fellow mates. Although we were all hesitant at first about the t.v.’s being on the first floor lounge, in the end I believe it was a great idea. Not only have I used the t.v. while watching shows such as Pretty Little Liars with 15 other girls, but EVERYONE can use the t.v.. Happy watching
Valentine’s Day February 20, 2011

This Valentine’s Day for me was spent mostly in class and with the newest love in my life. However, after returning from a long day of class, I opened my door and to my surprise, a white envelope had creeped underneath of my door. I was so excited to see what it was so I tore it open and sat down my stuff. To my surprise, it was a little mermaid Valentine’s day card. I took a good minute to think about who would put a card under my door and then I opened it. With 24 signatures in tact, my residents had become my Valentine’s. It seems like a weird thing to blog about but I feel like when these things happen to me, it reminds me of the community I have built on my floor here at Stevenson. I feel like we are all apart of a great big family and I love it. Not to mention, I love my residents and they deserved a shout out for my amazing v-day card!
Fleece Scarves February 20, 2011

Despite the weather being ABSOLUTELY gorgeous this week, MAP Daytime Activities gave us something fun and very out of the ordinary to do this Tuesday on the Greenspring Campus. A lot of the daytime activities are held here because believe it or not, the majority of our students are on the other campus during the week including commuters! Anyway, MAP had out all kinds of brightly colored and patterned strips of fleece fabric. I learned that by putting two of these strips together and cutting slits to tie, I could make a FABULOUS fleece scarf of my own for the cold, cold weather coming our way this week!
Mirrorless Monday February 19, 2011

Mirrorless Monday, sponsored by D*sire at Stevenson University hosted an initiative this past monday to get students, faculty, and staff to not use mirrors for an entire day. As a part of their efforts, large sheets of paper with quotes about healthy self image and esteem covered all of the mirrors on both campuses. When I walked into a restroom during the early morning, I was quite startled with what I saw. However, I really took the time to read all of the quotes and began to understand that as a society, we judge others and ourselves on physical appearance. Beauty, true beauty, comes from within. And I think we should all be reminded of how beautiful we all really are every single day. But for now, Mirrorless Monday will have to do.

Stevenson University invites the public to Adam’s Crayons: A Tale of a Few Stories, an art exhibition created by Barry and Laini Nemett and open to the public February 14-April 16, 2011, in the University’s Gallery on the Greenspring campus. An opening reception will be held Thursday, February 17, 6-8 p.m. The event is free and all are invited.
Stevenson’s Gallery is open to the public Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.
The story behind this exhibit starts with a children’s book, Adam’s Crayons (Galileo Press, 2011) written by Niki Leopold and illustrated by Laini and Barry Nemett. The book, scheduled for release in March, is almost 30 years in the making. In 1983, Barry Nemett had a painting exhibition featuring gatherings of animals, titled “Peaceable Kingdoms,” at C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore. Inspired by Adam, the artist’s then two-year-old son, the exhibit inspired author Niki Leopold. She approached Barry and his daughter, Laini, to illustrate her story. This exhibition—which includes all the images from the book as well as related examples of the collaborating artists’ drawings and paintings—tells these intertwined stories of Adam’s Crayons and the book’s creation.
Barry Nemett has exhibited his work and lecture worldwide. He has been on faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art since 1971 and has served as Chair of the Painting Department since 1992. Laini Nemett, after receiving her degree from Brown University, received a Fulbright Scholarship and studied in Spain. She is currently working toward her MFA at the Hoffberger School of Painting.

PROJECT LOVE YOURSELF – VDAY February 18, 2011
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events, Spring 2011 , add a commentHappy Valentine’s Day to all from Stevenson University!
This year we decided to celebrate our Valentine’s day just a little different by hosting a two day event of body tracings and Vagina Monologues.

On Monday, February 14th, Valentine’s Day students were able to join in the old time favorite art project of tracing your body! Once the outline was drawn on the paper students were asked to write positive sayings, quotes, feelings about themselves inside of their body tracings. These were then collected and hung up around the upstairs lobby of Rockland to be viewed before students, staff, and relatives attended the Vagina Monologues on Tuesday, February 15th.
On Tuesday, February 15th Stevenson University hosted the Vagina Monologues where students and staff members performed and spoke about sexual violence against women and girls. Family, friends, students, and staff all came out in support of these brave young women who embraced the powerful stories that are based from the award-winning play based on VDAY founder and playwright’s Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

Congratulations and a huge round of applause to all of the students and staff that took part in bringing this powerful event to Stevenson! We cannot wait to enjoy what The Vagina Monologues will bring next year.
VDAY is a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. Further information about VDAY can be found at http://www.vday.org/cojopening2.html
One Spot Shy of Top Ten February 6, 2011

Stevenson, within the past few years, has progressively climbed up the ladder of best colleges. Our placement has been announced for 2011 and we are just one spot shy of a top ten victory! I could not be more proud to go to such a phenominal institution. Below is an excerpt that can be found on the Stevenson University website about our new found success, including a direct quote from Dr. Manning himself.
Stevenson University Ranked No. 11 Among Regional Colleges-North Region in 2011 U.S. News Best College Rankings
“We are always pleased to be recognized for our efforts in these annual rankings,” said Kevin J. Manning, Ph.D., President of Stevenson University. “When you factor out the military academies and other tuition-free institutions in this category that are really not comparable to Stevenson, we are closer to No. 7 in the rankings.”
Stevenson University is Maryland’s most affordably-priced independent university. With more than 3,400 students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, and adult accelerated degrees in the classroom and online, Stevenson is committed to providing a distinctively career-focused education.
“Rankings can be helpful in showing us how far that we have come, but they are really just one snapshot in time,” Manning said. “What we focus on first is serving our students and fulfilling our institutional mission. We start the 2010-2011 academic year with a new football program hitting the field, a new gymnasium, new academic programs, and a strong vision of how we need to grow.”
Stevenson University has been ranked No. 11 among “Regional Colleges-North Region” in the 2011 edition of U. S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” rankings, placing it in the top 10 percent of the 319 colleges and universities nationwide that are ranked in this category.
