Stevenson University invites the public to Adam’s Crayons: A Tale of a Few Stories, an art exhibition created by Barry and Laini Nemett and open to the public February 14-April 16, 2011, in the University’s Gallery on the Greenspring campus. An opening reception will be held Thursday, February 17, 6-8 p.m. The event is free and all are invited.
Stevenson’s Gallery is open to the public Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.
The story behind this exhibit starts with a children’s book, Adam’s Crayons (Galileo Press, 2011) written by Niki Leopold and illustrated by Laini and Barry Nemett. The book, scheduled for release in March, is almost 30 years in the making. In 1983, Barry Nemett had a painting exhibition featuring gatherings of animals, titled “Peaceable Kingdoms,” at C. Grimaldis Gallery in Baltimore. Inspired by Adam, the artist’s then two-year-old son, the exhibit inspired author Niki Leopold. She approached Barry and his daughter, Laini, to illustrate her story. This exhibition—which includes all the images from the book as well as related examples of the collaborating artists’ drawings and paintings—tells these intertwined stories of Adam’s Crayons and the book’s creation.
Barry Nemett has exhibited his work and lecture worldwide. He has been on faculty of the Maryland Institute College of Art since 1971 and has served as Chair of the Painting Department since 1992. Laini Nemett, after receiving her degree from Brown University, received a Fulbright Scholarship and studied in Spain. She is currently working toward her MFA at the Hoffberger School of Painting.

PROJECT LOVE YOURSELF – VDAY February 18, 2011
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events, Spring 2011 , add a commentHappy Valentine’s Day to all from Stevenson University!
This year we decided to celebrate our Valentine’s day just a little different by hosting a two day event of body tracings and Vagina Monologues.

On Monday, February 14th, Valentine’s Day students were able to join in the old time favorite art project of tracing your body! Once the outline was drawn on the paper students were asked to write positive sayings, quotes, feelings about themselves inside of their body tracings. These were then collected and hung up around the upstairs lobby of Rockland to be viewed before students, staff, and relatives attended the Vagina Monologues on Tuesday, February 15th.
On Tuesday, February 15th Stevenson University hosted the Vagina Monologues where students and staff members performed and spoke about sexual violence against women and girls. Family, friends, students, and staff all came out in support of these brave young women who embraced the powerful stories that are based from the award-winning play based on VDAY founder and playwright’s Eve Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than twelve years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public.

Congratulations and a huge round of applause to all of the students and staff that took part in bringing this powerful event to Stevenson! We cannot wait to enjoy what The Vagina Monologues will bring next year.
VDAY is a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls. Further information about VDAY can be found at http://www.vday.org/cojopening2.html
