Spring 2011 October 28, 2010

You may think I’m crazy, but all of us here at Stevenson are already thinking about Spring of 2011!  Why, you ask? Because this week was scheduling week and boy, it was crazy as usual.  However, I am so excited that the fall semester is almost over!  I am that much closer to graduating and becoming a fabulous second grade teacher!

Homecoming 2010 = Football October 28, 2010

It is no secret that football is the most exciting thing to ever come to Stevenson University.  However, this past weekend during Homecoming weekend, we all received a little taste of what is to come for next year.  With their pink socks to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the newly developed team alongside of their coach Ed Hotle played in their first scrimage on Saturday morning with the University sitting in bleachers on the sideline cheering them on.  Not only were the boys very impressive players, it hyped up everyone for the season to come in 2011.  Now all we need is that marching band to get started and we will be ready for football season!  Although practices are over for the boys, they will be conditioning for the next few months in preparation for the upcoming season.  Good luck boys, we can’t wait for 2011!

National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week October 28, 2010

NCAAW is a University tradition that extends from the University of Maryland to the University of San Diego.  Colleges across the United States devote one week of their budget and time to educating students about alcohol awareness, particulary how we, as college students, can have fun without alcohol.  Shown above are two of the universities Resident Directors, Sondra Matter and Jessica Brown, serving mocktails in the Rockland Marketplace incognito of the Wellness Center and the D*SIRE crew.  Other events from the week include a showing of the movie Welcome to the Party, a program called Spin the Bottle, and the Sober Party.  As many of you know, I developed the Sober Party with my Western Run staff last year.  However, this year, the Sober Party was taken over by RHA.  The entire week was sponsored by the Wellness Center and the staff member was Sondra Matter.  It just goes to show that there is always something fun and educational going on at Stevenson (and other universities across the US).

Midnight Breakfast and a TV October 28, 2010

What could be better than a free breakfast at midnight served by your favorite university staff?  Going to this amazing event AND winning a brand new flat screen TV with a dvd player built in!  It was gorgeous and the breakfast was delicious.  I loved watching the freshman walk in with glazed looks over their faces.  They were amazed that breakfast could be that delicious and free at midnight!  It was so much fun and I cannot wait until the midnight breakfast returns with a vengance!

Toys for Tots October 28, 2010

It seems crazy that we need to start thinking about Christmas time already and it isn’t even Halloween.  However, The Patriot’s Club is on the ball and eager to gather unwrapped toys for tots who are in need this coming holiday season.  For those who do not know, The Patriot’s Club is a club on campus led by members of the University who are active in the ROTC program and some are even enlisted in various branches of the military.  It’s completely honorable that they are taking the time to collect toys for children who may not get any this season without our help.  Don’t have any toys to donate?  Check out the flyers on both campuses that contain a number you can text to donate $5!  What can be easier?  You text already, don’t you?  Than text for a cause.  Or donate new and unwrapped gifts to the Toys for Tots.  Boxes are located on both campuses.

Get HYPNOTIZED! October 19, 2010

This event brought to SU by MAP was extremely successful, yet a little suspenseful.  I know from an audience member’s point of view, it was a great time!  I did not get hypnotized, but watching the people who were stand up on the stage in the rockland banquet room was funny.  We never knew what the hypnotized were going to do next!  Another thing I loved about the amazing Frederick Winters is that he makes us feel like we are college students and not elementary schoolers.  It was a very appropriate activity for us socialites on the Stevenson scene.  Missed  it?  Youtube Frederick Winters… trust me, you’ll be on the floor laughing.

Stevenson Overflow October 19, 2010

With the addition of two new residence halls and a football stadium, we are running out of room here at Stevenson University.  Although parking has become limited on the Owings Mills campus, University staff is making a genuine effort to make everyone as comfortable as possible during this process.  And boy am I thankful for the new gym parking lot!  For now, residents are being pushed over to the School of Business parking lot.  Commuters are now being directed down to the new gym (or the Owings Mill Parking Lot) to help this process go along a lot smoother for everyone.  So for now, hold tight students, faculty, and staff – the ending result will be marvelous!

Also, I attended a meeting this past week to discuss the parking issue and freshman parking on campus.  For now, incoming and prospective freshmen, you have nothing to worry about.  So keeop your fingers crossed!
