Do you have what it takes to be the next Western Run Idol? For 10 hopeful contestants, they sang their hearts out for the chance at iTunes Gift Cards, Credibility, and the title of Western Run Idol! Judges included myself, my Resident Director Elizabeth Holt, and fellow RA Jeff Otradovec. Each judge was responsible for a winner in the categories of Musicality, Stage Performance, and Making the Song Your Own/Overall Performance. Contestants sang (and danced to) many musical features by Beyonce’, Berry White, Ashanti, and many more. Everyone in the audience was blown away with the vocal talent that arrived on set that night. Congratulations to the winners and all the contestants!
Pillowfight!!!! April 14, 2010

Oh yes, the much anticipated pillowfight was tonight and it was a blast! Everyone from Claire Moore to random residents showed up to this spontaneous bash in the apartment’s quad. I witnessed the action first hand and was so busy having fun, I forgot to take a picture! But none the less, Rob Bliss did an excellent job at creating a fun atmosphere on campus tonight. However, I would have loved to do some sidewalk chalk – that stuff was my favorite growing up as a kid!
National Alcohol Screening Day April 14, 2010

It is that time of year again: the National Alcohol Screening Day has arrived and Stevenson always serves it justice! Although I totally forgot about the event because I was so busy, the event was conviently placed in the middle of Rockland so everyone would stop by and fill out a screening form, play some games, and get some free Rita’s AND pizza from Lil’ Tony’s (the best pizza in the world!). The games were super awesome! Students were able to play Perfection with Beer Goggles on and walk the line, or as I heard some call it, Death’s Row. My favorite part was learning about how we percieve 12 ounces of beer and 5 ounces of wine and 9/10 we always pour too much. Which I found to be true when I tried it myself! It was very educational and fun at the same time. When I got three stamps, I was able to get free pizza!!! Woo! What a great day :]

Happy Birthday! April 14, 2010

I thought this was the coolest thing I have ever seen students do in Rockland. Tonight, I walked into Rockland for the usual grub and noticed a birthday party going on for a student on campus! The Elmo themed bash lasted about an hour and I think I heard them sing happy birthday 6 or 7 times! Nevertheless, I felt this was creative and defenitely low cost :]
Cards for Kids April 12, 2010

Tonight, the Susquehanna Resident Assistant Staff planned and held an event that in return will put a smile on a child’s face. For their philanthropy event, the team decided to have the residents make cards for sick children in the hospital. They supplied everything you would need to make the card! They even gave you the name of the little boy or girl you would be writing to. However, there were stipulations on what not to write in the card – because some of the children assigned to the cards have no cure for their disease. But as we all know, Laughter is the best medicine. So most of the residents decided to write funny stories to the kids so they have something to laugh at and enjoy! Way to go Susquehanna!
Ultimate Frisbee! April 12, 2010

Tonight was such a beautiful night out – so why not play ultimate frisbee? I learned that “ultimate’ frisbee is a conversion between football and original frisbee, only slightly more complicated. Even though I did not participate in the ruggedness, I sat outside and did my homework with my fellow RA Ashleigh. Speaking of RA’s – the freshman decided to take up a team of RA’s in a very heated match of ultimate frisbee! Watching them was pretty funny because they were sliding around everywhere! I tried to get a video, but I ran out of room on my memory card (probably from all the blog pictures I take). Nevertheless, when the weather is warm – take advantage! Go outside and do something! Gotta get that beach bod started!
President’s Celebration 2010 April 10, 2010
Posted by Marina in : Spring 2010 , add a commentEvery year accepted students are honored at the one and only President’s Celebration. Accepted students bring their friends and families to spend the day at SU while attending info sessions, eating great food (such as yummy crab dip), touring the residence halls, picking up free goodies, and leaving with a sense of Mustang Pride. This year, I was not a guest at the President’s Celebration – but I got to do some pretty cool behind the scene stuff like set-up for the students’ arrival on the Owings Mills campus and give personal tours through Western Run! I also got a glimpse of the cake before anyone else! Check it out:

And yes, it was delicious after a long day of giving tours! But before the tours began, all of us resident assistants got together and tied balloons of yellow, green, and white all over campus and anxiously awaited the arrival of the accepted students! After all the balloons were out, we ate the best boxed lunches in the world and went back to Ratcliffe to be trained on giving tours through the residence halls. However, while walking through the door, we all noticed the hundreds of neatly folded shirts laying on tables for the accepted students! They were extra cool this year because “Class of 2014″ was embroidered into the shirts! Here is a picture of the shirts lined up!

I hope the students love their t-shirts! (I know we sure did!). Once the training was finished and we were done trying to count the shirts, we moved onto our assigned residence hall where we would be giving tours. However, while walking back to Western Run, a few of us noticed something a little off. A swimming pool? On the volleyball court? It’s true! In light of the President’s celebration, a few f our current students took the iniative to throw a celebration of their own which included a pool, sun tanning, and playing all types of games in the quad! Here is a picture of my new friend, sun bathing by his pool.

He looks so comfortable! However, we all had a job to do so we scurried off to our buildings. As soon as the clock struck 3, hundreds of people began to come through the residence halls in need of tours! Surprisingly enough, a lot of the people attending had never been given a tour of the residence halls! So, as trained professionals, Ashleigh and I paired up and gave as many tours as we possibly could! All of the accepted students and their families were so awesome and I cannot wait to RA some of them next year! But for now, my job is done and President’s Celebration was a blast! Here is a picture of Ashleigh and I before giving tours :] By the way, Congratulations to the Class of 2014 and Welcome to Stevenson University.

Appreciation for Ice Cream Lovers :] April 8, 2010

Do you love ice cream just as much as I do? Than today was your day to be an ice cream lover because today at the Ratcliffe Community Center, representatives from Haagan Dazs were handing our free ice cream for their Customer Appreciation Day! I got a scoop of cookies and cream while my friend, Ashleigh, grabbed a cup of chocolate peanut butter. They both tasted so amazing! But what’s better than free ice cream? A free raffle for a Netbook! That’s right, all you had to do was eat free ice cream and you got a raffle ticket for the netbook! Missed out? Haagan Dazs ice cream is sold in Jazzman’s and if you hold off and buy it on the 22nd of April, then you too can be entered into the drawing!!!! This was a pretty sweet deal.
President’s Celebration is Right Around the Corner! April 8, 2010

Today as I walking through the Greenspring Campus on my way to class, I was stopped and urged to go around the tents being set up for this Saturday’s President’s Celebration. Thousands of accepted students and guests will be here at the University to take last minute tours, eat great food, and get that final look at what Stevenson has to offer. I know as a resident assistant I am looking forward to giving tours throughout the residence halls all Saturday. The tour is the most important part! However, it was exciting to know that this process of set-up is well underway!
Western Run Movie Night April 7, 2010

Popcorn, Soda, and a friendly face?
That must mean movie time!
Monday night, the Western Run ResLife Staff sponsored a movie night, with all the fixins’, in the big t.v. lounge in the Ratcliffe community center. All of the resident asssistant brought in two of their favorite movies and let the residents choose what they wanted to watch! So the decision was made, and Heavyweights it was! Heavyweights is a big-time comedy about these heavyweight kids who go to fat camp for the summer and a nasty Ben Stiller comes into the scene as the new owner of the camp. I must say this is a must see movie for this summer! :]
