Pimp Your Piggy! March 30, 2010

What can you do with jars, paper, paint, and other craft materials? Pimp your piggy bank! Tonight, students from across campus enjoyed coming to this penny-pinching inspired event to decorate their very own money banks to take with them and save for something extra special. I made myself one for my trip to china, however, I may need a larger jar! Students came into the lounge and chilled with each other, having craft time and relaxing away from school work. Now everytime you have extra change, you’ll wanna put it in a cool piggy bank!
Save Lives. March 29, 2010

It’s that time of year again at Stevenson. Are you a charitable person? Do you enjoy giving back to your community? Did you know by donating your blood and an hour of your time, you can save three lives. Today, students, faculty, and staff members united to donate time and blood to those who really need it at the triple sponsored blood drive upstairs in the rockland banquet hall. When interviewing a student on their experience, she said she never felt better, and the free cookies were delicious. So, do you want to help save the world? Try saving lives first. Three at a time.
A Different Kind of Party March 28, 2010

Yes, those bottles say Mary Kay on them, and yes, I attended a party on campus in the apartments tonight! A lot of people assume that all the events on campus are sponsored by the university, but clearly this is a misconception. I encourage everyone to have their own events for themselves and their friends! These cute little get togethers are so much fun and most of the time, free food is involved, just like at any other event! So why not? Toga it up!
Mr. and Ms. SU 2010! March 27, 2010

You might remember this friendly face – Wild Stang! Well tonight, Wild Stang was at Mr and Ms SU as not only a supporter of the event, but as the H is STEPH, Stephanie Sufczynski, that is.
But Steph wasn’t the only participant in this new found tradition, other contestants included Mathew Steffey (who got down with his girls beer gut), Megan Peterson (who had an insane group of friends in the back), Stephanie Sufczynski (who won’t let you rain on her parade), Jen Schmitt (who showed her bad girl side), T’Bony Jewell (who cheered her way through the spirit competition), Ebonee Hallman (who should have won and award for best karaoke outfit), Bobby Jackson (who split on stage for us, twice), Joey Camfield (who makes them good girls go bad), and finally Lego Dela Cruz (who sported a tux like we’ve never seen before.)
The night was so much fun and the hosts, Ryan East and Joe Burkett, were hilarious! Some girl even picked up a $300 visa gift card! What an incentive. But I didn’t go for the cash, I went to see who would be crowned Mr and Ms SU 2010.
But before all of that could happen, there was a glich in the system that forced that competition into a much needed dance party. Here’s a picture of the contestants busting their moves on stage waiting for the results:

Featured in front are last year’s winners, waiting patiently for the results. And sure enough, after the contestants got out all their jitters, the results were in!
This year’s Mr. SU is… Bobby Jackson!
This year’s Ms. SU is… Stephanie Sufczynski!
Congratulations Bobby and Steph – Mr. and Ms. SU 2010!
A Television Star March 15, 2010
Posted by Marina in : Spring 2010 , add a commentThis morning I woke up extra early to leave for a week long trip to Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina. I put my cinnamon buns in the oven, poured my glass of orange juice, and went channel surfing for something to watch on t.v. before 7 a.m. My Dad suggested sports center – I’m not that kind of girl. So I flew past a couple channels until this face caught my eye…

Yes, that is President Manning! I couldn’t believe my eyes until I heard him talking about the Baltimore Speaker Series and then I knew it was really him and not just some weird dream of mine. President Manning was featured on Comcast Spotlight to discuss the Baltimore Speaker Series and the impact it has on the Stevenson Community. Further in his discussion, he provided viewers with a direct number to purchase tickets to some of the upcoming speakers. Personally, I think the Baltimore Speaker Series is a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved in the social and political world. Way to go Manning!
Tunnel of Oppression March 10, 2010

Tonight I attended an event down in Wooded Way that I must admit changed my life for the better. The Tunnel of Oppression, adopted from a fellow United States University, put hate into the perspective of an outsiders view. Going through the tunnel was a bit surreal yet very eye opening at the same time. Skits were performed on issues about sexuality, gender, abuse, relationships, race, ethnicity, suicide, discrimination, and depression. Ultimately all of these topics boiled down to hate. Words were placed on the wall such as “honky” to display all the oppressive words people use from day to day. Everyone at some point in their life has been discriminated against. The Tunnel of Oppression brought these issues to the light and helped outsiders understand the views of those discriminated against. This event is planned to become an annual event here at Stevenson University. Student Activities and the Wellness Center are taking suggestions for improvement for years to come for those who experienced the tunnel for themselves.

No, you aren’t seeing things – that is a real sea gull sitting a top a light fixture in the School of Business parking lot. Spring – can it be?! The weather was at an amazing 60 degree’s today and I (and the sea gulls) am loving it! I cannot wait for Spring Break next week so I can go South and get some more warm weather!
A Festive Night at Rockland March 8, 2010

Did somebody order an African Steel Drum Band? Because they are ready to play!
That’s right! Tonight in Rockland we enjoyed some live entertainment while chomping down on some authentic African foods in honor of Multicultural Awareness Week. My favorite was the shrimp and rice stir fry! Oh man was it delicious! The line was so long that it extended to the Waffle Makers at one point in time. But hey, it was totally worth it. Another tasty treat on the menu tonight was the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on top. By far the best thing I have ever eaten in Rockland, ever! I cannot wait to see what Rockland has in store for us for the remainder of the week!
Hello I Am… March 8, 2010
Posted by Marina in : Winter 2009-2010 , add a commentPersonally inviting you to enjoy Multicultural Awareness Week at Stevenson University!

Today marked the beginning of a very exciting and diverse week here at Stevenson called Multicultural Awareness Week. I walked into Rockland tonight to make myself a shirt and declare who I am and why I am different. Student Activities handed out the shirts and wanted students to focus on the things that make up different. Putting “Hello, I am Awesome” wasn’t quite cutting it this time around. I decided to put that I am “A Survivor” because I am proud of the fact that I have survived many things in my life.
Around campus I have seen all kind of shirts! Some funny, some serious, and some are just straight forward. I plan on wearing my shirt Wednesday through the Tunnel of Oppression where I will be giving tours. It starts at 5 and ends at 10 so please take the time to come down for this special ten minute tour!
March Open House March 6, 2010
Posted by Marina in : Winter 2009-2010 , add a commentThis morning I woke up bright and early, excited to show my room for the March Open House (formerly the February Open House) and also give tours through Western Run with my fellow RA’s. I got out of bed extra early to find that there was no water… anywhere!!! Here is a picture of my faucet all the way up, but nothing is coming out! (Trust me, I started to panic)

Luckily for me, Stevenson had port-o-potties delivered later in the day. Although, I still went home because I needed a shower. But, if students could not go home, shuttles were running students over to the Greenspring campus to shower in the locker rooms! Yeah SU!
After figuring out the water situation, I got to work cleaning up my room and getting dressed for the tours. While getting ready to walk out the door, Wild Stang walked in to judge our suite! Below is a picture of him standing in my room! It was so exciting! But not as exciting as having over 200 students come and tour my suite this afternoon. I loved having people come in and see just how awesome our dorms really are! Haven’t taken a tour yet? You HAVE to see our residence halls. Even Wild Stang loves living here!
