Round Two February 10, 2010

I feel as if this picture speaks a thousand words.  But the most important of them of course is: NO SCHOOL!  I don’t think SU has ever seen this much snow on the ground!  This winter is one to remember… and will be in the record books.

Snow and Donuts February 9, 2010

Would you like some Donuts to go with this Blizzard?

This would be the drive-thru ordering screen down the hill at Dunkin Donuts pre-Blizzard round two.  Although it started to snow, my friends and I decided that we wanted some hot coffee and donuts for the morning since we figured we’d be snowed in… again.  We walked down the hill and discovered that the inside part to Dunkin Donuts was closed.  We ran out of hope until a lady came to the drive thru window and told us we could order through the ordering screen!  So of course we took the opportunity and ordered our donuts!  My friend Ashleigh and I snuck around the corner and took a picture of everyone else picking up their orders!

But not without some hard work and effort.  Today, I decided that I needed to get out of my dorm room and out into the real world again.  However, when I walked out to get into my car, I was greeted by a mountain of snow a-top my car which I inevitably had to shovel to get my car out.  It took me a little over 30 minutes before I had shoveled enough snow to get my car out!  Here is a picture of me standing on a snow mound digging out snow from underneath my car!

SuperBowl Sunday!!! February 7, 2010

It is not surprising to us students that Jazzman’s and Rockland would be low on food due to the Superbowl.  But I’m not sure we knew everything would be wiped out!  Here is a picture of the demolished chips rack at Jazzman’s that is always full!

But nothing went as fast as the wings they were selling for the Superbowl game out of Rockland.  The workers boxing up these wings for students told us that they’d be gone by kick-off when in reality, they were gone by 6 p.m.!  Who can blame us?  They were so good!  For a little more than $8, a student could walk in to Rockland before the game and buy a dozen wings using their SU One card, Flex, Cash, or Credit!  You know I got some with my love for spicy food! :]  Here is a picture of the wings I personally bought for the Superbowl.  They must have been lucky, too, because the Saints pulled out the win!

It is now Sunday and the snow has finally stopped here at Stevenson.  Here is a beautiful picture I took of Ratcliffe while walking back to my room.

Snowed in at SU: Day 2 February 6, 2010

As we awoke from another night of game playing, star singing action, we noticed it was still blizzarding outside here at SU.  This is a picture of my roommate and her friends who had a big sleepover for the snowy weekend!  Of course I was invited, but I felt as if a real bed was better than a blow-up mattress on the floor!  Anyway, I got out of bed and walked to the end of my hallway to have a look outside.  This is what I saw:

It was literally blizzarding outside!  I was not about to got out for breakfast.  Thank goodness I bought some milk and cereal at the store.  But the big question for the day was not what to eat, it was what to do.  However, being the creative thinker I am, I knew there was plenty of things to do here in my room.  So I got to playing a round of LIFE with everyone in the suite and then onto a game of WAR with some good old fashion cards.  I always have a deck of cards in my room for times like these.  But when playing games got old, I turned to my movie collection.  Looking out the window and watching the snow fall vigorously, I knew it wasn’t time for me to head out just yet.  So in the meantime I dug through my stack of movies.

This isn’t even all the movies I own!  But anyway, I ended up putting in one of my favorite Disney movies and taking a nap.  Watching the snow fall can take a lot out of a gal.  I guess I never got the same genes my Mamaw has.  She used to live in Alaska!  Needless to say, I would never survive.

After my nap, I woke up to see that it had stopped snowing!  Now was my chance to go out and get waist deep into the snow!  So I put on the warmest clothes I own and went out for a snowball fight with some of my friends.  Here is a picture I took before the massacre began!

One of them, as you all know, is my roommate Chelsea who was on my victorious team for the snowball fight!  Kids were out all across campus playing in the snow with friends and sledding!  It was so much fun.  It was only a matter of time before my nose was completely frozen and I was forced to go back into my dorm to warm up a little bit.  But a little while after, Tylor and I decided to take our first venture to Rockland since the storm.  I was worried about falling, but hey, it couldn’t hurt worse than some of those snowballs!  I walked out of the doors of Western Run and saw the plow trucks plowing our parking lot.

Much to my liking, there is still lots of snow on the ground. :]

Unfortunately for me, however, was the sight of my poor car, Betsy, being stuck under a massive mound of snow that will probably take me a week to fight through.

Good thing I don’t need to go anywhere anytime soon but Rockland.  Which by the way was delicious!  We went in and feasted on Pizza, Sandwiches, and our favorite, Turkey with gravy and masher potatoes! Yum!  After the feast we walked outside and knowing my love for sunsets, Tylor took this picture for me on his phone:

Isn’t it just beautiful with the snow?  Ahh!  To finish up our evening, a bunch of us gathered in the lobby on the third floor and played board games like Apples to Apples.  It is my belief that every college student should own a copy of this game – it is awesome!  The campus came to life at night and several students were out and about on campus enjoying the snow that has now gotten us off of school for Monday!

But for now, I am gearing up for the Superbowl tomorrow!

Snowed in at SU: Day 1 February 5, 2010

After hearing about our school closing for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on Thursday evening, we were all totally stoked for the snow that was on its way.

Waking up this morning was unsettling to those of us who were previously excited for this monster.  Many services around campus such as the library and Pandini’s are now shut down for the weekend.  And if you can recall, I was supposed to be at a conference this weekend for Reslife called No Frills.  But because of the snow we pulled out to ensure the safety of all of us going on the trip.

Regardless, though, today was our very first day being snowed in at SU.  So what do you do when you are snowed in at college and 20+ inches are headed your way?  You prepare, and you play.

To begin the day, Tylor and I went to Giant to get some goodies to last us for the weekend.  Apparently we weren’t the only ones who got the memo because the grocery store was packed!  We ended up getting everything we could to last us for the snow.  Check out our freezer!

It is jammed packed!  But hey, what else are we supposed to do for food?  Plus, we are college students!

After food shopping we came back, relaxed, watched a movie until all of that got boring.  The snow started to pick-up by midday and we didn’t even go to Rockland for dinner.  Instead, the brave Dominoe’s delivery guys brought us our dinner!  But waiting for the food I did my February door decs, which are totally cute!!  If you want to read the blog about me beginning my February bulletin board, click here: http://wildstang.stevensonuniversity.org/.  But for now, here is the stack of door decs I completed… that took me over two hours!

Yeah, I work hard, even on snow days!  But enough was enough and I decided that we needed to do something a little more fun.  So Tylor and I sat down and played Electronic LIFE.  Much more complicated than regular LIFE, by far.  For two hours we played and then slowly more and more people joined until we had 8 people in my room laughing and talking and of course, playing the game of life.  For those of you who are interested in owning LIFE, here is what it looks like!

It was so much fun playing with everyone!  We were one person away from breaking fire code… woops!  But the night wasn’t over.  We moved into Chelsea’s, my suitmate’s, room to play the Wii!  This is the best game system in the world to have on a snowed in eve.  So as a group we piled into her room and played the Wii Fit.  Our fave game?  The Hoola hoop.  It is awesome!  Here is a pic of our friend playing the hoola hoop game!

After another hour of laughing and playing, I was all gamed out and ready for bed.  But not before checking out just how much snow we had accumulated in the 12 hours that it had been snowing.  Here is a picture I took just before bed of students walking through the snow.

Maybe tomorrow after it’s done blizzarding I’ll get to go out and play in the snow!!

Sweet Treats February 3, 2010

This morning I tried the most amazing cupcake from Jazzman’s.  Although all three were not available at the time, the Banana Foster cupcake was and boy was it delicious!  I cannot wait for Jazzman’s to introduce the other two to the Stevenson scene.  But be warned, they go fast!

Hark! The Angels! February 3, 2010

Snow Angels, that is.

Anticipating no school, I looked out my window to see how much snow really accumulated.  But when I opened the blinds, snow angels appeared on the ground in the 3 or so inches of snow.  Of course, I had to take a picture for all of you to see!  Whoever did this, good for you.  That’s the snowy spirit!

Meet Abbie and Tiffani:  Both Resident Assistants in Wooded Way prepping for a SuperBOWL event where residents came, ate pizza, and decorate bowls (get it, super BOWL) in the new Wooded Way kitchen!!  After many months of trying to gain back the freedom of the kitchen that all residents were once told about, the communal kitchen will now be open starting on Friday.  Of course there are rules, but hey, a kitchen is a kitchen so eat on Wooded Way!
