Recovery December 20, 2009

Posted by Marina in : Winter 2009-2010 , 1 comment so far

As many of my friends and family members know, I have now completed my second surgery to remove my pre-cancerous birth mark.  Last Tuesday, I went into the Surgery Center of Frederick Maryland at 6:45 a.m. to have the final portion removed.  With surgery taking almost 2 hours due to numbing complications, my father and boyfriend awaited anxiously in the waiting room while my mother sat in the operating room with me, holding my hand every step of the way.  Their love and support has helped me through this week with my recovery.  Which consists of pain medication and sitting in the recliner, trying not to over-strain myself.  And as many of you know, I am a busy body… so this week has been tortuous.  I am thankful to say that I returned to my daily grind this morning and finally updated my blogs – sorry for the wait.  And I know my boss is reading this blog thinking – why is she writing about this?  Well, along with recovery, I was reminded that Stevenson University and the people I have met there have impacted my life in such a positive way.  Tuesday morning and throughout the entire week I received at least 30 text messages wishing me luck and a speedy recovery.  But what I will cherish most is the bouquet of tulips (my favorite flower) sent to my house from my suitemates, Maria and Chelsea.  So although I am stuck here at home looking out the window, patiently waiting to get back out into the real world, I am reminded of the love and support I have back at school.  Thanks to everyone who helped make this recovery successful and positive for me.

The Storm is Coming! December 19, 2009

If you had shopping plans for today, you can bet your bottom dollar they were cancelled.  Early this morning, all of Maryland and the tri-state area experienced our first winter storm for the year.  Concluding with 21 inches here in Sharpsburg, Maryland, all we can do now is pray for a white Christmas!! Enjoy the snow my friends.

I wonder how SU made out… have a picture?  Send it to me at mwarrenfeltz@stevenson.edu and I will publish it in this blog!

Happy Holidays from SU! December 11, 2009

Here in the Admissions Office at Stevenson University, we want to make it feel like home.  So for the holidays, every year a tree is decorated in honor of the spirit of Christmas.  After Christmas, this tree will stand tall with gold and purple ornaments hanging on the limbs to represent the Baltimore Ravens!  Pretty cool, huh?  This tree reminded me of how much fun it is to decorate my own tree at home with my family.  So yesterday when I arrived home for my winter break, we went out as a family to cut down our Christmas tree then take it home to decorate with all sorts of ornaments.  Although it isn’t that tall or fancy, it is our tree. :]

Sushi? December 9, 2009

Do you like Sushi?

I know what you are thinking – that is not sushi.  But in reality, it is – it’s candy sushi!  For those of you who don’t particularly care for seafood or just need a sugar rush this candy sushi is perfect for you.  Made with rice krispy treats rolled with fruit roll ups, gummy worms poke out from the middle and are delicious dipped in chocolate sauce!  The reslife staff of Susquehanna held this event in the Ratcliffe center at 8 p.m.  I made it just in time after my english final, and boy am I glad I did!

Sell Your Books – Now! December 9, 2009

This semester, SU did something different that benefited a lot of students – they added to Book Buyback to the Owings Mills campus!  The bookstore staff members sat in the Student Activities booth and offered students cash for their used books.  Cash is always wonderful – right?  Not if you are only receiving $25 for that $125 book.  Here are some tips for selling back your books that may increase your overall buyback profit:

1.  Post a sign on your laundry room bulletin board or other area’s around campus.  Students may be selling back their books at this time, but in a few short weeks they will be buying books for the spring semester.  And who knows – maybe you have a book for sale that someone needs!  I call this method the underground market because students aren’t forced to buy or sell to/from the bookstore.  Also, when selling these books back to your peers, you want to make sure you give them a fair price that is cheaper than the bookstore’s listing price but higher than the buyback price.  For example, I sold a $120 math book for $65.  The bookstore was going to sell it for $90 used and I would have received $20 for the buyback.  Ultimately, I made a $40 profit and the buyer of my math book saved $25. :]

2.  You can also sell your books to online companies such as Amazon.com or Chegg.com who will also give you more money for what your book is worth.

3.  Make sure you are patient!  This year, the book listing will not be available until December 21st online.  So if you don’t go home with some cash in your pocket, you may return to school and receive your overdue payment.

I hope these tips helped!  Look for my book buying tips soon!

Midnight Breakfast! December 9, 2009

In midst of the snow falling, breakfast was calling my name!  Once again, the midnight breakfast was a blast.  Doors opened to Rockland at 10:30 p.m. where we were greeted and served by staff members here at Stevenson University!  Hopefully this midnight breakfast will become a tradition during Midterm and Finals weeks because the students love getting out of their crowded rooms to get some good grubbin’ right before midnight!  Come on now, we are college kids!

An (un)Pleasant Surprise December 9, 2009

Snow… during finals?!  Needless to say, many students across the board were panicking that our finals would have to be pushed back an entire day because of the unexpected snow fall that began last night around 8 p.m.  Although some students seemed to be over-joyed with the phenomenon, others were worried about travel arrangements and of course… their finals.  Our grades depend on our finals that are generally worth 25% of our grade.  However, we were not the only one’s surprised by the snow – the news stations that continuously called for rain showers throughout the evening were found scattered about the Owings Mills area trying to update their false presumptions.  Here is a picture I took during the snowfall of a news crew trying to capture this breaking story!

Fortunate enough for Stevenson University students, we woke up to rain falling and snow quickly melting.  Finals were on!

Brain Freeze! December 8, 2009

Last night, the Patapsco ResLife staff held in an event in the Ratcliffe main lobby called Brain Freeze.  Students were given the chance to take a break from studying to drink some hot cocoa and eat a bowl of ice cream with sprinkles, peanut butter sauce, and even marshmallows!  However, I prefer the marshmallows in my hot chocolate!  Be sure to check out the Gingerbread Man Decorating event tonight hosted by the apartments staff!  Or kick off the Winter Break with the Midnight Breakfast!!!  Remember kids, take a break!

Who wouldn’t stop in for a free breakfast?

Starting around 7:15 a.m. this morning, RHA officers sat in the Ratcliffe community center and offered students free breakfast to boost their energy and help ace their finals!  We offered apple and orange juice, mini bagels, and munchkins from Dunkin Donuts!  They were delicious!  Many students grabbed a quick bagel and cup of juice before getting on the shuttle for those super early finals.

Here is a picture of our food table: you missed out!

Look out all week for ResLife sponsored activities that will relieve your stress from studying!

Take a Break! December 6, 2009

Tomorrow officially starts finals week.  Right around now, students are going to be staying up late to cram for their big exams, some of them even being tomorrow.  So, in preparation for students’ over-frying their brains, MAP and Residence Life held two separate events supporting breaks from studying!

What could be better than a massage?  From 5-9, MAP held an event in the Ratcliffe TV Lounge entitled Milk, Cookies, and Massages.  They had professionals come in to treat our very stressed out students, and then fed them some delicious cookies which were put down with some ice cold milk.

Residence Life staff 102 from Western Run also held an event in Ratcliffe tonight.  Staff members brought pies, eggnog, playdough, coloring books, spongebob, and much more!  This gave students a chance to relax with friends while enjoying some delicious homemade pumpkin pie.  Students were laughing and relaxing – something they weren’t doing before while studying.  Studies have also showed that coloring in a coloring book can relieve stress, way to go ResLife!
