A Wild-Life Update November 19, 2009

As most of you already know, I love to walk around SU and take pictures of the various types of wildlife.  Well, much to my surprise, I found the one thing I was looking for…

:]  While walking to get dinner, Tylor and I almost stepped on this little guy!  For week I have been looking for a frog and we finally found one!!!  We didn’t name him, because we soon found out that it is illegal to catch frogs and keep them as pets in theh state of Maryland.  Woops!  Needless to say… I have a pretty wild life.

FOR DINNER?!

Tonight, I was surprised to walk into the Mustang Grill and find this sign… telling me that I could order breakfast, for dinner.  And not just any breakfast – the most delicious breakfast sandwich this University has to offer!  I loved this because two weeks prior I wrote a note saying “I want breakfast 24/7.”  And as they say – YOU HAVE SPOKEN. WE ARE LISTENING.

Way to go SU – hopefully this isn’t a one time thing!

At Camp Puh’tok!

Who says being an Elementary Education major isn’t fun?  Yesterday, my fourth grade class from Cedarmere Elementary School took a field trip to the Native American inspired Camp Puh’tok.  The students were given the rules for the day and then went off to their activities.  I helped chaperone a group of 12 children, all very enthusiastic to get started.  The students played native american games, learned how to use their weapons and tools, built a fire, got their war paint on and made some custom jewelry.  It was so much fun for me and the children.  I hope they go on another field trip very very soon!

Great American Smoke-Out November 19, 2009

Today, the Wellness Center sponored a campus wide event called the Great American Smoke Out.  “Commit to Quit” was the events headliner and it was such a success!  Being National Smoking Awareness Month, students, faculty, and staff were educated on what smoking can do to your body and ways to stop smoking.

On the Greenspring Campus, they drew a box and wrote “Great American Smoke-Out” in the middle with other words such as “Smoke Free Zone.”  This gave students a place to sit and relax without having to breathe in second hand smoke that is actually more harmful than smoking itself.

Although Stevenson University is not a smoke-free University, the Resident Halls have made it easier for non-smokers to live in a low smoke area.  Students are not allowed to smoke in the resident halls and starting this year, students have been asked to stand ten feet away from the over hangs if they would like to take a smoke break.  Although it has not been enforced to the extent it should be, the University is pushing towards making our environment comfortable for every student.
