Freshman LEGO Challenge is a HIT! November 20, 2008

Throughout the day, students enrolled in the many Freshman Seminar classes came and represented their class by building their own unique structure for the LEGO Challenge. This year, the theme was Career Architecture. Not only was playing with LEGO’s all morning fun – They had fun loud music and TONS of food. Trust me – way to get a hundred freshmen in a room? Free food.
I unfortunently had class and was unable to stay for the results, but check back and I will have them to you ASAP. I know it was hard – after walking around the room I saw everything from and Ambulance on the road, to a bunch of buildings, to steps to success, to big machines. FUN. Fun. FUN.
Check back, and I’ll fill ya’ in!
You Missed Evan Wecksell? November 19, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events , add a commentWhat a shame.
He was HILARIOUS! With the appearance of a college kid, the ears of an elf (which were totally cute, btw) and the voice (at times) of Screech Powers.
After the first three minutes, I couldn’t help but laugh at his jokes and his songs. Walking into Pandini’s – you smell italian food, and you hear nothing but laughter and the strumming of his guitar. It was one of the best acts I have seen here at Stevenson all year.
So if you missed him – look him up on youtube. You’ll be sure to see him next time around (if there’s a next time).

Enjoy the snow lovers, enjoy!

The Tour. November 15, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events , add a commentToday I ganged up with a friend of mine in the Mustang Crew and took some prospective students around on a tour of both campuses. It was so much fun and it’s so school to see people come here and be interested in SU and what we have to offer as a University. Even the parents were intrigued and excited!
But unfortunately, some students aren’t always able to come and take a tour – so I decided to do some work for you. While going through the tour I took photos of each part of campus we visited and I also did 10 second clips of prospective students (hopefully just like YOU!). So if you can’t make it up for a tour – I got you. Just go to my page titled “SU Tours” and look through the pictures and listen to prospective students talk about where they are from and why they chose to come to SU.
Rain Rain Go Away November 13, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events , add a commentCome again another day
That’s one of my favorite little rhymes from childhood. Not to mention, another favorite of mine is coming up today.
Tonight is the opening presentation of Arsenic & Old Lace.
A tale of two women, who in a sense, are totally nuts and homicidal. It’s a true classic! One of the actors on stage will be a boy who went to high school with me who was involved in drama and did this play my eighth grade year! This play is old as time but it is a true blessing to watch.
I encourage anyone to go see it tonight, or any of the other nights it’s playing.
The Library? November 12, 2008
Posted by Marina in : General, Informational Events , add a commentYes, it can be useful.
Today in my English class we touch a trip to the Library in the new Business Building. Although it only holds business and reference books, the computer lab is a great resource. Speaking of the computer lab – that’s where we had our lesson.
A librarian came in and talked to our class about the resources available to SU Students as well as all the databases we can us to find what we need. Our class is currently working on a term project where we compare a book to a movie and research how the book was turned into the movie. I did this term project in the Spring for my AP Language class in high school – it’s very interesting. But I NEVER had the amount of resources available to me then that I have now at Stevenson. We learned about how Stevenson shares a database with other colleges such as Hood meaning I can have resources from other schools that I need shipped to Stevenson! She showed us three databases that will really help me find information on movie reviews, articles, and biographies and screenplays on my book, We Were Soldiers Once and Young.
So if you can’t make it to the library – get on your computer and check out the “virtual” library!
Kelly Macfarland - November 11, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events , add a commentMay not be the best mother someday, but she is a very very funny lady.
It was fun to listen to someone I can connect with. She joked of weight, and kids, and grinding teeth – which my boyfriend discovered I do. She was truly a delight and I would love to see more comedians. They light up the mood anytime of the year here at Stevenson. And even though there aren’t alot of them, when they come it is always a blast! I haven’t missed one yet!
Growing and Learning As A Community November 11, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Informational Events , add a commentIt’s no question that after the presidential election more issues arose within all different communities. Race, sadly, has become one of the major issues that America has struggled with for centuries and is now an issue with our soon to be president, Barack Obama.
But instead of running away from the issue and hiding from it, SU decided to do something about. We’re all about making everyone feel comfortable, always. So today in the Rockland banquet room from 4-6, the community held a town hall meeting with a very special lady. Bonnie King Taylor deals with issues of race in communities, and took time out of her busy life to come and bring the SU community together. She spoke of ways to handle it and how one shouldn’t hide from it. She was remarkable.
I think anyone and everyone who attended the meeting truly benefited from it and it opened up some curious minds.
Next up on the schedule is a comedian, which are totally my fave!
Schedule Stressing. November 11, 2008
Posted by Marina in : General , add a commentBy the end of today – the entire freshman class will have registered for their Spring 2009 semester courses.
Talk about stressful. I stalked my computer for a half an hour before my registration time, just to make sure I’d get into what I wanted. Beleive it or not – this process is SOOOOOOO stressful! My friend Maria was sitting in her room watching to see if this one class would fill before her time. She really needed the class, and with one minute left – that last spot was taken. And although it’s a bummer, there are ways to make your schedule work for you. Mine (luckily) had no bumps in the road and it took me about 3 minutes to register
Now, while registering in the summer – this was not the case. I ended up getting none of the classes that I wanted – but in the end, I have an AWESOME schedule and I’m glad I slept in or whatever I was doing that day. Which is another point – don’t miss your registration time!!! eeek! I learned that the very very hard way, when nothing was left for me to choose from. Yeah – now that was stressful!
But everything works out in the end – so don’t stress out SU!
