Wellness Wednesday: Depression October 16, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Informational Events , add a comment“More than Books Weighing you Down?” The simple answer to this question is yes – but am I one of the 45% of students who suffer from depression?
Last night in the Avalon screening room, I learned a million and one things about depression (and stress) and ways to manage stress levels in my life. One of the things that struck me as the ‘obvious’ answer was time management. I’m one of those students who will stress and wait til the very last minute to get something done… Not healthy at all. It’s actually the main contributor to my stress levels… but I do not suffer from depression. Sure being away from home is hard – but the number one thing that gets us down is loneliness.
Cassie Stalling and Sheppard Pratt were amazing speakers last night, hitting the main points of sadness, depression, loneliness, overwhelming-ness, and many other words ending with ‘ness.’ Many things that they mentioned could help lower my stress levels as well as yours.
If you are a student here, I highly recommend attending the Wellness Wednesday events. One – it’ll help with that lonely feeling, because you’ll be with people! And Two – they are very informative sessions (and you get scholarship hours!!!!)
Have a wonderful raining day
Midnight Madness October 15, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Uncategorized , add a commentTonight around midnight, I decided to take a stroll around campus because it has been a LONG LONG day. Mid-terms are not the best thing in the world… but I always find peace in late night walks.
But for other SU students, they find peace in a good ol’ game of sand volleyball – at midnight. They were laughing under the moonlight as boys and girls jumped around and relieved stress. There were other kids, as usual, sitting at the picnic table, talking and doing homework. There were other people out strolling along just like I was. I mean, after watching the presidential debate – who wouldn’t want to blow off some steam? But that blog will come tomorrow.
It just goes to show you that no matter what time of day it is, there is always something to do around here!
Until Morning – Cheers

Spring Is “In” October 14, 2008
Posted by Marina in : General , add a commentWell – Sort of. the time has come for students to meet with their advisers and register for their Spring semester courses! I can’t believe half the semester is already over. I, luckily, did not have any mid-term exams. (Thank God). But anyway, this morning in Freshman Seminar we went over the steps and procedures to signing up for classes. It is very important that freshman make appointments with their advisers ASAP so they can get into the classes they want. Unfortunately – freshman are the last to log on and register for classes. But please don’t get discouraged – sometimes it works out for the better.
Over the summer, I went to sign up for my classes and much to my surprise – every course time, teacher, and day I wanted was filled. Completely… filled. I had a mental breakdown to say the least. Now, after Tylor got me to calm down and focus, I found that it wasn’t such a bad thing. We found most of the same courses and made a wonderful schedule that really complies with me life. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I don’t have class past 12 o’clock! Which is exactly what I wanted. And I only go to Greenspring on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 12. It worked out perfectly – so please, just keep your head up… everything will work out. Sometimes it won’t be the way you want it to be – but you can’t always get what want, but if you try sometimes, well you just might find, you get what you need.
So freshmen – hurry and make appointments with your adviser’s so you can possibly get what you want!
Weekend Wrap-Up October 12, 2008

I know, I know – We’re adorable. I hope you all had a fabulous weekend.
Mine ended with a show choir show at some church. It sounds really dorky – but I LOVE to go! My boyfriend is the dance captain for the Sophisticats – and I am so very proud of him. I support him in every single way I can. It was awesome to see their first performance of the year.
This old woman walked up to me and goes – “Is one of them yours?” I giggled and replied – “Well, the one in the pink is my boyfriend…” And she goes- “I couldn’t help but watch you look at him throughout the show. My husband died five years ago… and you look at your boyfriend the same way I looked at my husband for 48 years. God Bless my Dear, God bless.”
I think that was the most sentimental thing anyone has ever said to me. I must confess, I love Mr. Tylor Githens with all my heart… and I’m glad that I could go to the show and support him at what he does best. He is truley amazing in all aspects of life and I can’t thank him enough for loving and supporting me.
Ahh. I’m a sucker for romances (lol).
Well I must be going
Night to all.
Hometown Homecoming. October 11, 2008
Posted by Marina in : General , add a commentIT IS ALL ABOUT THE BLUE AND WHITE.
I’m having a fabulous time at home over homecoming weekend. Homecoming is so much fun!!!!! Boonsboro won their homecoming game, 54 to 6 over our ‘rivals’ Williamsport. I can remember competing against Williamsport in color guard/band – having good competition makes everything so much more interesting! My little brother is going to the dance tonight
I feel so gosh darn old! But next week, I will be attending Williamsport’s homecoming with Tylor (gulp). I know I know… but sometimes we find love in all the wrong places.
Next weekend I will have TONS of pictures. Tylor and I are photogenic to say the least. Anywho, I hope all is well at Stevenson and I can’t wait to go back tomorrow!!!!!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, kids
Men’s Soccer Team Feels Defeat. October 8, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Sports , add a commentThe four o’clock men’s soccer game ended in a hard loss today against Salisbury University. Sitting up top towards Caves watching the game, I saw streaks of yellow flashing down the field like lightning bolts, as dots of white tried their hardest to defend their honorary goal line. Salisbury pulled out the strong 3-0 finishing score after halftime. They put up a tough fight for Stevenson’s boys, but unfortunately the fight was a little more rugged than expected.
Good Job Men – Hang in there.
Presidential Debate: Round Two. October 8, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Informational Events , add a commentLast night, eager young (and old) students gathered around in the Avalon Community Center’s big screen room and watched the much anticipated debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. Surprisingly, there was little to be said in the room – maybe because not much of anything was really being said at the debate. There is no question that Barack Obama is in the lead when it comes to young adults in the United States right now. But I think it’s great that students want to explore both sides of this election, because for many (including me), this election will be the first time they get to vote – and their vote could change America, and our futures. Politics - yes, are very boring – but are essential.
Now on the other hand – political leaders are not always that essentially well-spoken. For example. I walked into my English 151 class today and had a discussion with my teacher about the comment that McCain made that was heard and picked apart by the entire country. “Many people did not vote for the 700 billion dollar bailout – like that one…” as he points to Obama. Wow is the correct word to use here. Not to mention, I heard the phrase “I love my country” for every single answer McCain presented to the public. LAME. Yes we know you love your country – but what are you going to do to help and change this country?
As you can see, I am a Democrat and I am voting for Barack Obama this year. But moral of the story is, I’m happy to see my peers getting out there and caring about who is elected into office. It’s also good to have strong personal views and morals… and it helps to have someone running that shares almost the same views and morals.
I also liked how McCain wore a red tie with a white shirt, and Obama wore a blue tie with a white shirt. Can’t get much more patriotic than that folks.
Sand Volleyball: Mission Completed October 8, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Fun Events, General , add a commentFINALLY! The sidewalks are open, and the sand is flyin’. After some last minute adjustments to the new sand volleyball area, students were having a blast doing something new yesterday. There was a group of boys jumping, and laughing, and serving – just having the time of their lives. One guy even wanted to play so bad – that he left his cute little white dog leashed to the construction fence poles! Little did he know, his dog got more attention than he did – as we walked by hearing “OMG he’s so cute – I’m taking him with me!” The boy grinned and said “No, no.” It was adorable to say the least. But it’s fun to just go out, put your feet in the sand, and do something fun and new (to the Stevenson campus). Take a group of friends… Or join in with people already down there. If you aren’t interested in playing, it’s always a good time sitting, relaxing, and watching the boys play some… ‘beach volleyball.’
So sit back, or kick it up, and enjoy
Monday Night Football – SU Style. October 6, 2008
Posted by Marina in : Sports , add a commentTonight as I walked back from getting food with my friend Maria, I noticed something new… football. A pack of boys, coming from all different dorms gathering in the suites quad to play there own game of Monday night football. Now I know you’re probably thinking – SU doesn’t have a football team. Correct. But, coming within the next few years, one day we will have a football team… Maybe not next year – but soon!
So prospective students – even though there may not be a football team quite yet – gather up your gear and your pals and check out SU. If the boys here have that kind of passion for football without an established team, imagine the dedication and drive that will be put forth when we finally get a team.
At the end of the game – the boys walked away with smiles on their faces and dirt on their jeans. It was like they returned to a part of their youth, and loved every second of it. Hopefully this Monday Night football extravaganza in the quad wasn’t the last.
Until next Monday, Enjoy
